Governor William Smith was the third son of Colonel Caleb Smith and was born in King George County on 7 September 1797. Smith studied at the English and Classical School of Thomas Nelson in Hanover County, Virginia, and continued to study law under Thomas L. Moore in Warrenton, Virginia.
